A multiple sclerosis twitch is a common symptom associated with the neurological disease.  Also known as fasciculations, a MS twitch is something that can happen in the muscle.  It is not always painful.  In fact, most of the time it is just a passing flutter.  Many people will experience a muscle twitch at some point in their life, but people with multiple sclerosis may experience them on a regular basis.  This can be related to the nervous system damage that is done through the process of demyelination in the disease.  A passing twitch can be a sign of a interrupted signal going through the body from the nervous system.  Luckily, muscle twitches tend to come and go, and they are not an indicator that the disease is progressing or getting worse.

Muscle twitching can also be the result of disuse of the muscles due to nervous system damage.  Sometimes, certain muscles cannot be used as much, and they will become stiff.  This can sometimes cause twitching or cramping as the muscles try to be stretched or used.  These types of twitches can be painful.  A way to avoid these types of muscle spasms is to try and participate in gentle exercise on a regular basis.  This will help to keep the muscles limber and strong.

How to Avoid A MS Twitch

While a multiple sclerosis twitch is not a serious symptom, it can be an annoyance.  There are many ways to deal with muscle twitches at home through alternative treatments.  Some people find relief from muscle twitches by taking a hot shower or a bath.  The warm water can help to relax the muscles and reduce twitching.  Many people recommend taking a hot shower or bath before bed if the twitching keeps you from having a restful sleep.  Other patients have had success with rubbing the muscle that is having the spasms.  You can simply rub it with your hands, you can use lotion or oil, or you can try something like Icy/Hot cream.

For painful muscle twitching, you should see a medical professional.  They may want to prescribe something like a muscle relaxant.  This can help if the muscle twitches are caused due to a muscle being too tight due to disuse or overuse.  Physical therapy or certain exercises can also be helpful in some situations, and different doctors can make the proper referrals for patients.
